1. What fascinates you most about plant science?

Plant science fascinates me because it reveals a hidden world of life we can explore at every scale. From studying the intricate patterns of plant growth in an entire ecosystem to unraveling the cellular and genetic makeup of a single plant, each layer offers unique insights. This field also amazes me due to the many interdisciplinary approaches - bringing together genetics, cell biology, biomechanics, and so much more. It's like piecing together a puzzle, and each tiny piece contributes to our understanding of plants as a whole.

2. Tell us briefly what scientific questions you are pursuing at MPIPZ.

At MPIPZ, I am working at the intersection of plant developmental biology, genetics, and cell biology. I am particularly interested in understanding how the behavior of individual cells is regulated by specific genes, and how these behaviors come together to shape complex structures, such as leaves. By understanding these processes, we can uncover fundamental principles of plant growth and help improve crop productivity.

3. Who has inspired you greatly in your career so far?

Many people have contributed to my passion for science. My parents greatly encouraged my curiosity for natural sciences from a young age. Later, as I progressed in my education, I was inspired by several female scientists, including group leaders, professors, and fellow PhD students. They showed me what it means to be curious and passionate, yet resilient in research. Seeing their dedication made me believe I could thrive in science too and greatly inspired me to pursue a PhD in biology.

4. What did you find most challenging in your career so far?

Finding my personal strengths while managing the intense demands of research has been quite challenging for me. It’s easy to get absorbed in your work and lose sight of the bigger picture – what do I really want long-term for my career and my well-being? Taking a step back (easier said than done) and setting time aside for self-reflection and mentoring has been crucial for me in navigating my career.

5. How do you see your future in science and why?

In the future, I hope to take on an organizational or management role, where I can contribute to shaping the direction of science and foster supportive and productive work environments. I firmly believe great science thrives on fruitful collaborations, shared curiosity, as well as mutual respect and consideration. This is a morale I hope to bring to all my future work. Having a career in science, driven by interest and passion is such a privilege, and I hope to keep pursuing it for many years to come.
